Topic: Autism Spectrum Disorder and Problematic Sexual Behavior

       Talk description:

This presentation will help you understand the relationship between autism and sex offenses from a forensic psychological perspective. It will cover:

    • What is autism?
    • How do the biological issues of autism affect someone's thoughts and behaviors?
    • Why would autistic traits facilitate the cause of a sex offense?
    • What are some tips to communicate effectively with an autistic person?

    Speaker bio:

Chris Rebholz, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist who specializes in working with autistic adults. Her private therapy practice emphasizes autistic adults that work in tech. Her forensic practice emphasizes evaluations of adults with developmental disabilities as well as criminal charges. Her 2012 doctoral dissertation was the first research to examine autistic adults that held professional jobs and lived and worked independently. She has taught continuing legal education to the King and Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Associations, as well as the Washington Defenders Association and various chapters of the Society of Human Resource Managers.

Prior to earning her doctorate and a license to work as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Rebholz earned her bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University and worked in the computer industry for over 15 years. She was one of the 400 most senior women at Microsoft, where she worked as a program manager in Microsoft Research. She also worked for Intel, where she was one of the two senior product line managers responsible for shipping the company's flagship microprocessor, which (in today's dollars) made $2.5 billion in its first year on the market. She became interested in autism in 1999 while working in tech, when she read the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for the first time and realized that around a quarter to a third of the staff reporting to her were probably on the spectrum.

This workshop will earn you 2 hours of continuing education.

Fantasy, Porn, and Casual Sex: What Constitutes Healthy Sexuality?

    Dr. Justin Lehmiller

Summary: Myths and misconceptions abound when it comes to understanding what constitutes healthy versus unhealthy sexuality. For example, it is widely assumed that “deviant” sexual fantasies alone are a necessary and sufficient cause of sexual offending, that casual sex is inherently harmful, and that pornography is “addictive” and widely damaging to people’s sex lives and relationships. However, science and data tell a different and far more nuanced story. In this presentation, we will separate fact from fiction when it comes to fantasy, porn, and casual sex. We will explore what is “normal” when it comes to sexual fantasy, the extent to which fantasy and behavior overlap, and the factors that do and don’t predict sexual offending. In addition, we will explore what constitutes healthy versus problematic pornography use and the overall effect that porn has on consumers. We will also examine the circumstances under which casual sex is linked to positive versus negative outcomes.

Bio: Dr. Justin Lehmiller is a social psychologist and Senior Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. He is host of the Sex and Psychology Podcast and author of the popular book Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life. Dr. Lehmiller is an award-winning educator, having been honored three times with the Certificate of Teaching Excellence from Harvard University, where he taught for several years. He is also a prolific researcher who has published more than 50 academic works, including a textbook titled The Psychology of Human Sexuality that is used in college classrooms around the world. Dr. Lehmiller is a much sought-after voice in the media on sexuality research and education. He has been interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and CNN, and he has appeared on dozens of international radio, podcast, and television programs.

This workshop will earn you 4 hours of Continuing Education in Health Equity.

    Pedophilia: A Contemporary Understanding

The sexual abuse of children continues to spark controversy, often leading to strong legislative measures and public outcry. However, research has shown that only a portion of those individuals who target children for sexual activities possess either a particularly strong sexual interest in or preference for children. Psychiatric diagnoses associated with this subset of persons who sexually molest children are Pedophilia (sexual interest in or preference for prepubescent children) and Hebephilia (sexual interest in or preference for early pubescent children). This interactive workshop will explore Pedophilia from both a historical and contemporary perspective, focusing on etiological hypotheses, diagnostic and assessment methods, and practical strategies for treatment and risk management. This presentation will be of interest to mental health practitioners, probation and parole officers, correctional workers, and legal personnel.

Robin J. Wilson, Ph.D., ABPP is a board-certified clinical psychologist who has worked in sexual violence prevention for more than 40 years in hospital, correctional, civil commitment, and community settings. His practice focuses primarily on the assessment, treatment, and risk management of persons who have sexually offended, with particular focus on reintegration of higher risk individuals after long periods of incarceration and individuals with special needs profiles (e.g., intellectual disability, autism spectrum, fetal alcohol spectrum, etc.). Robin has published and presented widely on various topics related to sexual violence prevention and his expertise is frequently called upon by courts, governments, and nongovernmental agencies in local, national, and international jurisdictions.

This workshop will earn you 2.5 hours of CEUs.
